Another morning, another Monday, another beautiful day in Calgary! It’s hard to believe we’re almost out of August and into September, a time of changes in routine, schedules, and seasons. Although I love the fall (running on crunchy leaves, feeling the crisp air, anticipating Halloween, eating candy corn…), our summer was pretty short here so I’m soaking in as much of it as I can until we make that transition to the next season! This weekend was a prime example of that, and for the first time in a long time, I enjoyed some fun girl time with good friends while Mikey was out hiking with a guy friend of ours.
After a great morning BodyRock + jump rope workout, I met up with my friend Jacque to catch up on life: her recent missions trip to Cambodia, her job, life around Calgary, etc – it had been a while…WAY too long!
A smoothie and a chat with my good friend Jacque! She’s one of those people who brings joy and leaves you wanting to be around her more.
I love talking about life, about struggles, about joys, about faith with friends because I always leave challenged to think from different perspectives and engage in life more actively. Thanks for the chat, friend! After that, I was off to one of the lake communities in Calgary to connect with some other girlfriends, ALL of whom, are pregnant! It was so fun to be around these glowing women, to hear their stories of pregnancy, and to realize how much changes in a marriage, in the individual, with our expectations, when someone becomes pregnant. Although we’re not quite there yet, it was fun to talk and hear form their experiences!
In the middle: me, Rachel (11 weeks), Elisa (due in November), & Brett (due this Thursday!).
Highlights included laying in the sun and chatting, kayaking on the lake together, and eating my first Iced Cap from Tim Horton’s delivered free of charge by Elisa’s husband Ryan. Hard to believe I’ve been in Canada this long and have yet to drink one! It was…good. I can see why everyone has them in their cars or walking around town – better not get too used to that indulgence. Thanks for the great afternoon, ladies!

Meanwhile, back at the ranch house, Mikey was taking a nap after a great afternoon hike up Yamnuska with our friend. We both gathered strength after a day in the sun (funny how that zaps your energy!) to head out to our friends’ house for some Global Fest firework watching. Instead of paying for the event, we gather annually at their apartment and watch the nearby show from their balcony! What a better way to spend your time – good friends, chatting and reconnecting, with a personal playlist created by Steve and Mikey…can’t top that! I brought some veggies and hummus – always nice to bring something you can feel good munching on if you’re not sure what the options will be at a party. Somehow I passed on the wine but enjoyed a bit of the peach rhubarb crisp that Steve made and the kettle corn that was around too.
It was a great show! The best part was connecting with friends we hadn’t seen in ages…it’s so neat to finally be back in Calgary and feel a bit more settled. But that’s summer life for you too…moving back into routine with fall approaching is a good thing for me – I’m looking forward to staying consistent with the communities we’re involved in and having some structure to our days. Our time Saturday night with friends was the icing on the cake of a people-filled, fun, summery day.
Sunday followed suit, beginning with the latest sleep-in I have had in years: 9:45 am! After waking up at 7 am and contemplating a quick morning workout, I decided I could do it later and taking advantage of waking up with Mikey instead of before him was a better use of my time. I couldn’t believe it when we woke up to some squirrels outside our window so much later! It was great. With Sunday often comes fun breakfasts, and since I had some leftover quinoa in the fridge (always good to have on hand), I whipped up some of Hilary’s quick cinnamon quinoa cakes. They turned out perfectly and fueled us up for the day ahead.
After a great service and time at church, we headed back home and got some work done around the house. Mikey headed off to golf with a friend and I finally got my sweat on with a bit of P90X Yoga in the backyard and an intense jump rope time in the basement.
Soon the day was gone, the sun was sinking, and we were headed over to our friend Jon’s house to make use of his hot tub and enjoy catching up with more friends from church! We brought our projector and speakers over, s’mored it up around the fire pit, and watched a movie together after chatting about life for a while around the fire. …don’t fires have a way of bringing out great conversation?
Can you say the “perfect summer night?” It was a great way to end the weekend, and even though we got home and in bed around midnight for the second night in a row (we are SO not party-ers!) and had a hard time getting out of bed today, it was SO worth it. To our small group friends: we love living life alongside you guys! And to Jon: thanks for hosting – your hot tub you are the best.
So that was how I soaked up the summer this weekend. How about you? What were some of your weekend highlights?
Here’s to another full week ahead as we prepare for our sailing trip with survivors! We’re excited about this expedition and so thankful to God for providing the funds for the adventure and to all those who donated. Looking forward to the unknown of that trip because we know we will hear some amazing stories and meet some incredible people along the way. What’s one thing you’re looking forward to this week?
I’m off to fit in my workout for today and then get on with the chores and tasks that lie before me on this Monday. Have a great day! Live well & be well friends,
Finally had my glass of wine (pictured above) but only after I had a delicious green monster – make one today! You won’t regret it as a way to cool down and get your greens in!
