If you’re a frequenter of health/fitness blogs, then I’m sure you’ve been exposed to the infamous Green Monster…
No, not that green monster! 😉 Now that I’m beginning to incorporate more raw foods into my regular diet, I decided it was time to try this interesting creation. Both a hot and sweaty run (6.25 miles in 47.03 minutes – wahoo! my goal was to beat 48 minutes and I did it – and felt like crashing afterward!) and some kale I bought at the farmer’s market for the first time the other day gave me great reasons to try out my very first Green Monster that I’ve read so much about on Angela’s blog! First I mixed the ingredients and into my blender went:
- 1 TBS flax seed
- 1 ripe banana (also can be frozen for a creamier, ice cream-like consistency)
- 1 TBS peanut or almond butter
- 2 cups of kale
- 1 cup almond milk
I blended this up for about 1 minute or so before adding a handful of big ice cubes to the mix. After a quick blend on the “ice” setting, my Green Monster was ready to be poured and enjoyed!
…but then I decided to go take a quick shower and cool down from my run (I’m sure the suspense is just killing you all!). 😉 One quick shower and I was back downstairs feeling refreshed and ready for some fuel. This post-run, post-shower, and post-GM fear shows it all (no cameras in the house right now; forgive the phone pics!):
That was a beautiful experience! I am absolutely stuffed to the brim right now (normally with smoothies at a meal I always feel the need to really bite and chew something like a sandwich or wrap too) – who would have thought? 🙂 And as for my personal review? This one was great – the veggie-ish aftertaste was barely there and in fact I think I could even add more in the future because I liked it so much! I know there are tons of add-ins that can be experimented with; I look forward to joining this movement and finding this simple and easy way to get more greens into my life.
Now it’s off to the store for a couple items before heading back home to get some reading done…on the list today:
- In Defense of Food by Michael Pollen
- The Raw Food Detox Diet by Natalia Rose
- Genesis 37 – 50-specifically Joseph’s story
I leave with the question: Would you ever try a Green Monster? Write in, tell me about it, and give a shot – I’d love to hear others’ thoughts on them. I’m already anticipating the boost of energy I’ll receive from this bad boy soon! 😉 Happy running, reading, and food experimenting!
