Hey everyone! How’s your week been? It’s been a long one since I last checked in, and before I get into the in-between days, I need to say THANK YOU for your incredible support and encouragement on my recent marathon! I am overwhelmed by how uplifting your comments and tweets were – what a blessing to have the support of this community.
Since then, I’ve gone for several fasted morning walks (pre-breakfast, about 30 min moving quick), been eating clean with a few fun treats thrown in the mix and went for my first post-marathon run: 40 minutes along the Bow River as I checked out the devastation.
It’s funny – this week the sun has been shining, it’s been beautiful and hot and there are people out walking and enjoying the warm air. In different parts of the city, however, there are people still cleaning out their basements and working hard to help others, donate to the Red Cross and provide food to those who need it. In the south, where we’re staying, it doesn’t even feel like a flood – everything is more or less untouched and life seems to be “normal,” which is weird as we’re still unable to get into our place. When we last visited yesterday, the basement was starting to smell, you could see the depth of the mud even up to the first floor and it just didn’t feel like our place. In the midst of all the damage and loss, there is an incredible sense of hope, helping and selfless giving in this city that is so neat to watch!
Unfortunately, the traffic in the southern end of the city has been terrible – which I know is small potatoes compared to all that’s going on! – especially as there isn’t a solid infrastructure here to begin with. My friend and PT Manager, Lauren, picked me up to go to work yesterday and in an hour we only traveled maybe 1/3 of the way to the gym. Nuts! So I cancelled for the day (to get there I would have missed my first 2 clients and I only had 3 all day with downtown being closed!) and decided after much vacillating to do the same today. Next week is a fresh week, traffic should be better, many are returning to work and although some lives will never be the same, I hope that in many ways we are impacted for the better.
So, since I’m not working (at the gym; plenty else to do!) today, I thought I’d participate in this fun survey that Janetha tagged me in. A few fun Friday facts about yours truly:
A. Attached or Single?
Attached! Married for 5.5 years to Mikey Lang and loving our life adventures.
B. Best Friend?
Anna – my friend from fourth grade who is Canadian but lives in Texas (as well as around the globe every few years!) while I’m American and live in Calgary. 😉 She is the most supportive, loyal, kind and thoughtful person I know.
C. Cake or pie?
If I had to choose, cake. If I can be more specific, ice cream cake!
D. Day of choice?
Hmm…maybe Saturdays? It’s nice to be done work, there’s possibility in the weekend to hit the mountains early OR sleep in and the long run potential is always great even if I’m not training for a marathon. 😉
E. Essential Item?
Oh…probably my water bottle. I’m a little weird about tracking my water all day! The only thing I track and I’m never without it – in movie theatres, at the gym, at church and even at restaurants!
F. Favorite color?
I’ve always loved the combo of blue, orange and gray, but if I had to choose one? Maybe orange.
G. Gummy bears or worms?
Bears! Just bought some for our upcoming weekend paddle boarding trip.
H. Home town?
Walnut Creek, California! Parents are still there – in the house across the street from where my brother and I mainly grew up! To get a feel for the town, check out the Walnut Creek Gangsta:
I. Favorite Indulgence?
Definitely red & black bites – only available in the States and very different from separate red or black vines. The BEST!
J. January or July?
July, hands down. With winter here for 9 months, I’m ready for July by the time January rolls around. 😉
Thinking about them! We’ve talked about after Mikey finishes grad school – so maybe in another year and a half or so. Who knows if we would be even able to, so it’s something I say we’re excited about but it truly is in God’s hands. I might not feel any “mothering instincts” (except maybe over my younger brother at times!), but I love the relationship I have with my parents and hear them always say that having kids is one of their biggest joys in life…Just a big, big decision that I don’t take lightly.
L. Life isn’t complete without?
Handstands! ..and Jesus. And jumping pictures and family – just to name a few things.
M. Marriage date?
December 15, 2007. It was a great day – weekend, rather! – with close friends and family. (Oh – and I didn’t have dreads then!)
N. Number of brothers/sisters?
The one and only Taylor Chalmers! Younger by 4 years, super kind and generous, crazy sense of humor and pursuing his dream of touring with his band, The Funk Houndz.
O. Oranges or Apples?
Probably apples on a more regular basis, but I do love oranges fresh in the summer.
None, really, although for as much as I love being outside and getting dirty, I’m kind of a baby about bugs. HATE mosquitos – maybe because I didn’t grow up with them in CA but they come out here in the spring and summer!
R. Reasons to smile?
S. Season of choice?
Torn between summer and fall. Summer because, as I said, it’s so short in Calgary and we get SO excited about the heat and sun…but I will always love the colors and crisp feel of fall.
T. Tag 5 People.
U. Unknown fact about me?
I often struggle with saying “I’m sorry” too many times. Let your ‘yes’ be ‘yes’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no,’ right? On a different note, I also play the bagpipes and have bunions. 😀
I’m a big sweet potato fan, especially topped with other things that aren’t vegetables. 😉
W. Worst habit?
I’d have to go with Janetha here – it’s procrastination. It’s actually something I’m actively working on because in some things it doesn’t matter much but other things (*renewing my permanent resident card, ahem!*) it can have serious repercussions.
X. Xray or Ultrasound?
Never had an ultrasound, only a few xrays…never broken a bone so I’m kinda boring in this department. 😉
Y. Your favorite food?
Oh boy…nothing beats toast and peanut butter (I’m so boring!) for a daily staple but if I’m going out maybe Indian food.
Z. Zodiac sign?
Gemini, although how that impacts my life I’m not so sure and pretty skeptical. 😉 June baby!
Your turn! I’d love to hear your favorite quote and the first thing that comes to mind when asked, “reason to smile.” Have a great weekend, friends. Live well & be well!
