Hey guys and happy April! Nothing like a glimpse of some palm trees in April to make you excited about the coming summer, hey? I, for one, am ready for it! 😀
I want to talk a little about moving while on vacation and share a great workout with you, but first a few reflections on our time in Las Vegas. I’ve been doing well in Vegas (baby!) aside from a little peeling (opps, I did it again!) and aside from the fact that Vegas is a place that honestly makes me sad…I’ve had fun and we’re hopefully going to a show tonight (never done that before!) and I LOVE the heat and desert but it’s just not our scene. It’s a place of excess and poverty, of those who have and those who have not, darkness (casinos/so many buildings) and light (sunshine!); a place of dichotomy for sure. So while it’s been a neat experience (specifically the conference and strengthening relationships with people) and to be here with Mikey, it’s made me think a lot.
But…we’ve still been enjoying ourselves. 😀 Here are some highlights so far!
Comedy show fun – THAT was a blast and a great highlight of the free time at the conference!
Fro-yo! …oh man, this was a splurge and I was H.A.P.P.Y! 😉 PB, hot fudge, Oreo chunks & Reese’s chunks. YUM.
We made some cashola at the slots with Ross!
Last night Mikey and I saw a movie – the Hunger Games – without reading the book(s) first. Not that we’ve ever read a book before a movie (seriously? psh!) 😉 but we didn’t and still enjoyed it! You could tell there was a lot more character development to be had and so much more that went on (hence in the film it was a little slow) but it was still interesting and finally a new, unique story rather than a remake of another Marvel comic! We LOVE good stories, especially those of people’s lives, so we appreciated that aspect of the film. We walked back late and slept in late too – perfect!
I got up and knew I wanted to move, so I headed to the gym to get my workout on. Here’s what I did!
It was a great workout that was finished in 30 minutes. You can also just do the second part (the sprints and squats) as a time challenge – see how fast you can get it done!
So…when you’re on vacation, do you rest or keep working out? I personally keep moving because I’m more about maintenance right now (in other words, if I had trained for a race, ran it, and then went on vacation I would probably take more rest days). I feel so much better when I move, so it’s always worth my while to get up even just a half hour early to squeeze in some type of action before the day gets away from me. Here are my top 4 tips for working out while on vacation:
- Adjust your expectations. Hotel gyms are hit and miss; some days you’re out later than you anticipated and sleep in later than you planned; sometimes you realize your body needs a real break. Be flexible with your workout plans as you can’t control all the elements that you might be able to at home. If you get the chance to move some, you’re doing well! So adjust your workout expectations and be ready to go with the flow.
- Get up early & get it done. If you’re like me, your purpose on vacation is to get away with people you love, so make the sacrifice of a bit of sleep in order to not cut into your days with your friends and/or family. That way you can get your workout done and get on with the most important part of vacation – being with people! Even if you’re not a morning person, remember that it’s likely your day will fill up with activity and you may not be able to squeeze it in later.
- Make your movement count. It might not be feasible to get your long run in, but you can make the most of your time by doing a HIIT treadmill workout (like the one above – sprints are your friend!) and burn the most fat and calories in the shortest amount of time. Keep your intensity high and your total time short and you will still keep your level of fitness and in fact see change!
- Eat as clean as possible. That might sound unrealistic when you’re on vacation, and I’m all for sweets and treats for something fun (see the above phopto of my loaded fro-yo!), but just eat (and drink) what you really want and don’t got overboard just because you’re “on vacation!” If you can’t move as much as you normally do at home, watch your in-take. Mixed alcoholic drinks are FULL of sugar and often one glass of wine will serve you better than a few margaritas, which not only have the alcohol but also lots of calories from sugar. Think about how hungry you are and pack your own snacks to tide you over with healthy options in between meals rather than letting your whole vacation be a spulrge. You’ll feel better about yourself AND enjoy the fun treats more when you have them.
I throw the last one in because nutrition and exercise simply cannot be separated from each other and go hand-in-hand. I’d also throw in the idea of making your vacation an active one and not thinking that vacation = rest only. Anyone got any other tips to add?
