Today was a beautiful, inspirational day. But let’s back up a bit before jumping to the present, shall we? [back in time…]
Thursday started with a trip to Inspire Health, an integrative cancer care facility (I shared about what I learned in the nutrition session here!). It was excellent! Definitely inspiring, informative, and interesting and we loved our hearing from the Director of Communications, Lionel Wilson, about the philosophy Inspire Health runs by and about the exciting things coming up in their work.
We headed straight to the ferry to boat over to Victoria, the beautiful capital city of BC. I LOVE ferry rides – the chance to have uninterrupted time to use as you please (to read a good book, to wander the deck, to do some work, to play games with friends, to simply gaze out the window and be inspired by God’s creation) is something worth cherishing. Good memories of university times too!
We were grateful once again to our WW2H Tour Director, Pat Taylor, and her husband Lee for chauffeuring us around and we found ourselves at our friend Adena’s house. It was great to reconnect after not seeing each other since a Young Adult Cancer Canada retreat where we met almost a year ago now in the Lower Mainland of BC! How great to share such an intimate experience and then instantly be connected – love how true community works. Thanks, Adena!
Before bed, I set my alarm for 7 am and told myself if I was up and out before 7:30 am, I would do my run. My body felt like sleeping so I hit snooze and rolled over, but realized that my runs are so important to me functioning well on this tour and woke up again at 7:23 am. Soon enough I kissed my slumbering husband goodbye, laced up, and was off to explore the city on foot. I had mapped out a run online but ended up veering off it; no matter! That’s what exploring is all about! The morning air felt SO beautiful – it’s definitely spring here – and running under the cherry blossoms was pretty inspirational. My legs felt heavy and body slow, but I managed about 6.2 miles with a few hill repeats afterward. I’ll bring my phone with my for pics on my Sunday morning run – can’t wait to show you guys the city from a runner’s perspective [fun fact: Mikey and I ran the Victoria 1/2 Marathon while we were dating!].
This morning we held our first short screening (40 min) at a Lunch n’ Learn with nurses and doctors at the BC Cancer Center in Victoria. It went so well! So many medical professionals came and stayed, even with their busy schedules, which was pretty inspiring to us, and I think they left with a better understanding of what young adults going through cancer treatments deal with as compared to kids or older adults…it’s different. Mikey did great speaking to this type of audience and we were glad to have Pat and Lee’s extra help too! What a great first hospital screening!
We were HUNGRY after we wrapped things up and I couldn’t wait to sink my teeth into Re-Bar, a vegetarian/vegan restaurant with modern, funky, and fresh food – can’t you tell from the excitement on my face?! My goal is to eat as much healthy, local food on this tour as possible!
But alas, it wasn’t to be, as the line was too long and we had a deadline and somewhere to be. #healthyeatingfail We’ll be back sometime this weekend! I guarantee it.
After enjoying some free wi-fi and a good Americano from a local Serious Coffee shop, we’re heading back to Adena’s to cook up a (delicious, healthy) storm of the stirfry variety! Should be fun. Tomorrow our screening isn’t until 7:30 pm so we have all day to relax and sightsee! Should be a blast.
So, I’m feeling inspired today! I hope you are too. In fact, I’d love to hear how you’re feeling inspired and what pumps you up, gives you energy, and helps you to live better and more fully. Leave a comment and let me know – and live inspired. Have a great weekend!
