Hey friends & happy Friday! To my Canadian readers, Happy July Long Weekend (in honor of Canada Day on the 1st) and Happy almost-Fourth-of-July to my American readers! I have some happy memories celebrating both and this weekend with the Monday off of work Mikey and I are going canoeing on the Milk River in Southern Alberta! This will be my second time in a boat in the past week, but first time ever in a canoe – nope! Just remembered: I paddled quietly out on Ditch Lake with some of Mikey’s family a few summers ago in Manitoba. That’s right.
At any rate, I’m looking forward to this adventure, despite the fact that I feel like a weekend at home is also needed. 😉 It will be a great time of fellowship with lots of families – kids and moms and dads and us. 😀
It’s the end of a long week back at work but a week that kept getting better – good sessions with clients at work and with my home clients, a chance to chat with my mom and dad and catch up on life, fun to get back into workouts and sleep in our own bed, etc. I was at the gym today from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm (not working full blast all day; breaks in between clients but not enough to go home) and we spent all night baking/cooking/prepping for our trip this weekend, so today’s post is a fun, light one: perfect for a Friday. I got the idea from Janetha who got the idea from Abby who got the idea from Dorry. Love sharing ideas in blogland. 😉 …enjoy!
It’s the Simple Things: ABC-Style
A list of the simple things that bring me joy in life! Feel free to play along in the comments (choose a letter or 3) or on your own blog!
A – Adventuring. Specifically with others. Life is too short to not engage in adventures with other people!
B – Baking. The urge doesn’t strike too often (some might even be surprised at the mention of this under “B!”), but it’s fun when it does! I especially love “healthifying” treats, which doesn’t always go over so well, except when I actually follow a recipe (like the below vegan protein cookies from Janetha below!). 😉
C – Coffee and conversation. I especially like the two together. 🙂
D – Dirt. More specifically, being dirty. There’s just something about the smell of earth and also not being able to shower or put on makeup or look in a mirror that I love! I feel most natural when I’m on a river trip or climbing for a few days on end with no shower options.
E – Encouraging notes. I’m a “words of affirmation” love languages type of girl, and a little note means the world to me (hence the reason I love and appreciate your comments so much too!).
F – Family. All of them! Canadian, American, old and young. My cousin Becky is getting married in September and I can’t WAIT to go home to California and be with everyone for the big event!
G – Group bonding. On a run (Hood to Coast 2009 pictured), in kayaks, in the wilderness, in a work team building setting, with family…I am such a group person.
H – High intensity interval training. (HIIT) I love getting my heart rate up there and getting an effective workout in such a short amount of time!
I – Islands. I’ve been able to visit a few now of different shapes and sizes (from the rocky coast of Newfoundland to many small, white sandy beaches in the Caribbean) and there’s just something cool about them.
J – Jumping pictures. They are the BEST kind to take and it’s impossible to take one without smiling so huge.
K – Kind men and kids. I just especially appreciate a man who is manly and yet kind, and kids who don’t bully or intimidate but are genuinely kind to others. So appealing.
L – Licorice. I LOVE me some licorice!;)
(my favorite. US friends, send me some! No wait, don’t – I could eat a bag in a day. Wait, yes, do – no don’t. 😉 )
M – Motivation. I love reading about what motivates others, hearing about what motivates others, and being a motivator of others myself! Finding out your passion and what drives you (from completing tough workouts to being productive in life) is so neat to me.
N – Night hikes/runs. I haven’t done these much but the times I have, with headlamps, have.been.awesome. 😀
O – Ocean views. Still a California girl at heart.
P – Posing. If there’s a random prop or a large or unique object, I’m there and I’m posing with it in some form or fashion.
Q – Quiet mornings with my Bible open and coffee hot.
R – Roadtrips! …I LOVE them. Putting my feet up no the dash, getting a coffee to go, chats in the car, snoozing in the sunshine…so great. The longer the better!
S – Sunrises. They are hard to get up for and harder to see than a sunset, so I kind of like that you have to work for them more and then get an incredible reward for waiting it out. What an incredible way to start your day; I (try to) never take for granted the fact that God causes the sun to rise again each day and shine upon us.
T – Toast. I think toast with almond butter and some cinnamon (maybe some jam if I’m feeling crazy) is one of my comfort foods. Definitely one of my comfort smells! I love it and always want some when I smell it toasting (or burning – like that too).
U – Ugly feet. Why? Because I have them and never judge someone who doesn’t have good looking feet. They show character! – and sure take me through many experiences each day. I’m thankful for these ugly feet. 😉
V – Vegetables. Most of the time. I want to like them more, but I appreciate how simple and nutritious they are for your body.
W – Working out. Cliche for a fitness blogger but true!
X – Xylichew. My father-in-law just retired as a dentist for many years, but this gum that’s truly sugar-free and good for your teeth is my favorite – thankfully it’s in the family to stay – in every car and a stash in the kitchen. 😉
Y – Youth. I’m 27 now but still feel so young (I hear others my age talking about how “old” they’re getting and don’t feel it!); I’m thankful that I can manage life on less sleep (perhaps not the healthiest but sometimes needed!), push my body hard, still enjoy one too many slices of cake and glasses of wine without much effect, and for the memories I’m making in this time. I hope that sounds rich and full and not unhealthy or over the top!
Z – Ziplines. If those aren’t a great example of some of my own personal fun things in life, I don’t know what is!
Shout out a few letters that strike you and share in the comments below – I sure appreciate hearing from you guys, my readers, and am thankful to be a part of this online and “in real life” community. Have a wonderful weekend – make it active, joyful, meaningful, and restful in the ways you need it to be. Live well & be well!
