It’s now 2011, the year where we all use hover boards for transportation and press a button and out pops some food. 😉 “2011” used to seem like a time in such the distant future, and it’s crazy to think that while we’re not using hover boards like Marty McFly, we are getting closer to “cooking” meals in a flash. Any way you look at it, 2011 is here and the question is, how are you going to live it?
Several months ago, I posted a Holiday Challenge for us all to be fitter and healthier by January 1st. Well guess what? Today is January 1st. So…how’d you do? I found it to be more of a challenge, quite honestly, than I thought it would be – the holiday parties started to come around, we began to travel, and healthier food (even with some planning ahead) was scarce in airports and on the road (thank goodness for options like Subway and grocery stores!). All in all, I think the biggest change I saw in myself was not physically (truthfully, I feel a little soft and am about 2 lbs up since the traveling began) but rather mentally. I feel like I have a more vitality-centered versus weight-centered approach to health and fitness, and I feel great and am enjoying life! Of course there are a few things I would like to change right now, but I am truly happy with myself right now. And that is definitely being fitter and healthier! I was able to not go overboard with the cookies and drinks and cakes and just enjoyed life without indulging two much (the result is those 2 lbs, but I think it was worth it). 😉
Besides enjoying good food, we’ve been enjoying great friends and family too (like my cute cousin Carly Blue above) – and what a way to finish one year and start the other! Here’s a little recap of the end of 2010 to the present:
- Traveling! We’ve so far had a fun 12 hr. road trip from Calgary to Leavenworth, WA to visit good friends; a plane ride from Spokane, WA to Portland, OR; a road trip with family down from Oregon to Lafayette, CA. It’s been a blast!
- Family Fun. From skating on a lake in Banff on Christmas Day with Mikey’s family to a wedding and lots of good hang out afternoons in rainy OR, we’ve really been enjoying our wonderful families over the past week!
- Reconnecting with friends. From friends in WA to friends in Oregon and now down in CA, we are truly blessed to be a part of great circles of incredible people.
- Relaxing & enjoying life! …not a bad way to end a year. 😉
And now we’re here in rainy CA, enjoying more family and getting ready to see friends and hold a screening for our film here. We’re pumped for a few day trips to Yosemite (snowy and beautiful!), San Francisco (always a must), and possibly Napa Valley (for a taste of wine and walk around the potentially rainy vineyards). And while I haven’t thought specifically about any “resolutions” (I haven’t done them in the past, actually), one of the things I want to do in 2011 is push myself physically at least once a day. This can be dropping and doing a set of 20 push ups while waiting for water to boil, doing a set workout, or squeezing in a run when I don’t feel like getting outside in the cold. My mom and I started this while at home today and I did a high intensity 12 minute workout together and then performed 100 kettle bell swings to finish us off. In about 15 minutes, we were wiped out and satisfied, and definitely felt better for the burst of energy just expended after lots of good food and little movement. Remember, it’s worth it! Keep moving! Challenge yourself! I promise you’ll feel better for having done so afterward. 🙂
Any resolutions for 2011 out there? I would love to hear a fitness goal or a daily challenge for yourself if you’ve set any. In the meantime, start today and don’t hesitate to make a change – change your nutrition, switch to water from juice, walk up your office stairs rather than take the elevators, get good at doing push ups! It begins with one step; take a step today. Live well and be well!
