11 days. That’s it! Only 11 more days until I run my first marathon. To say I’m excited is an understatement; to say I have no idea how it’s going to go is quite true; to say I’m pumped for a new experience hits the nail on the head. I can’t believe it’s almost marathon time – the training seems to have flown by and I thought I’d give a little update on where I’m at in the process right now.
I’m thankful to have a job that allows me the flexibility to get my own training in during the day. My last 20 miler was run Monday before work since I don’t start until 11 am, and this week I also ran a 10 miler before heading to train clients on Monday. I’ve been able to squeeze 5 or 8 mile runs in between clients during the quieter times during the day and have gotten up early to get my long runs in on Saturdays without changing our lives too much for the weekend. I know not everyone can do this, so I’m grateful for this flexibility and think it’s helped marathon training seem, honestly, quite doable.
While we’re on the topic of FLEX(ing)(ability) (see how I did that there?!), I’ve been pretty flexible with how I’m training in these past few weeks, and although I haven’t stuck exactly to plan, I’m enjoying throwing in some higher intensity workouts in the gym (both with my classes, clients and just myself) to take the place of some of these smaller runs as my taper has begun this week. Smart? I’m not sure. Will it hurt me? I don’t think so. I’m still getting a few runs in a week, just not all in the order they’re prescribed via my basic plan.
As far as goals are concerned, I’m really trying to focus on just finishing well and not burning out. I would love to come in under 4 hrs, 30 min and even closer to 4 hrs, 15 min, but I know that for the first one you never know how your body will respond and what race day will be like and focusing on finishing well is a good goal. That being said, I’m trying to be happy with focusing on JUST that rather than on the clock.
One thing I’m not excited about and also wondering if it could affect my time is the fact that the race starts at 10 am. 10 am – really?! Not sure why it’s that late – perhaps because it’s in a national park? – and although the weather could change (being in the mountains in June, after all), it could be quite warm and there’s not a ton of shade along the course. I was told by a client that there has been a mama bear with her cubs in the area where a chunk of the race is, and that real possibility of wildlife could be a factor on race day too! Who knows – lots of unknowns but that’s all part of the excitement.
Thursday I’m doing 28 burpees with the staff. Why? Because it’s my 28th birthday! And if I can’t run 28 miles on my birthday (think I’ll save 26.2 of those for next week), then I may as well get some group burpees in. 😉 I’m thinking of some type of birthday WOD (workout of the day) as well…28 reps of various exercises? Leave your favorite move (keep in mind I’m already doing 28 burpees, but if you want me to burpee my face off I’ll do a different variation of one!) and I’ll incorporate it into my workout tomorrow!
Live well & be well amigos!
