Hello everyone! I’ve emerged from a week of busyness and fun and have five things to get this pre-week party started…Hope you enjoy and share some thing with me from your life at the end! 😀
#1: Random Workouts:
I’ve really been enjoying some tough, shorter, high intensity workouts with my Ultimate Sandbag (check out my review video here!). It’s a blast! I love using it and all the variety it offers, so I’ve been doing workouts that involve it in almost everything! A good change of pace.

With the busy week it’s been, my running has been hit and miss (much easier to get a good sweat on in 20 quick minutes versus a long run – the kinds I prefer!). I was still able to manage 2 or 3 runs this week, taking advantage of some beautiful weather when it struck later in the afternoon. I was at a meeting downtown-ish and was able to run near the river – snow underfoot, river half frozen and half flowing, sun shining down and movement for 7.2 miles! It was a beautiful, impromptu run covering some of the same ground that Corey, Glen and I ran together when they were visiting Calgary!

#2: Friday Fun:
Friday was SUPER busy but ended up being a great, eventful day! It began with some early morning clients (my favorite!) and a great view of the sunrise – it was such a ball of fire today!
a beautiful sunrise
The rest of the day was full of picking up different items for our Real Deal Bonspiel curling tournament, our first fundraiser for Survive & Thrive Expeditions (STE). I ran around in the car picking up last minute silent auction donations, party supplies for 44 people and packing/loading gear into the car with Mikey and his parents (who were a huge help!).
Along the way, both Mikey and I were on TV! Mikey and his boss, Janine, were interviewed by every news station in Calgary as it was the launch of their website, Cancer Bridges, an online resource for cancer survivors in Alberta. They were later on CBC’s “going home” station, The Homestretch, which many people listen to on their commute home from work. It was incredible! They did amazing and I’m so proud of all of Mikey’s hard work and the people who have helped along the way.
Somewhere between clients and party rental pick ups, I was interviewed by Shaw TV about being a personal trainer! They saw an article I write for monthly community newsletters and googled my name, found my website, and contacted me about doing a health beat segment on personal training. I was ecstatic! Although the segment will only be about 2 or 3 minutes, we had a great time filming some shots of a typical workout with a client and friend, Nicole, and we were both interviewed separately. I am so thankful for this exposure and will certainly post the link when it airs later on Monday!
…a big day indeed for the Langs. 😉
#3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY DAD!
February 18th never passes without me remembering the significance of the day – the day my dad was born! With a busy day ahead we had a short window of time to call my dad but it was so great to talk to him in the morning and wish him a happy day! I love my dad simply because he is my dad! He always tells me, “I love you more than you love me!” and it always makes me smile, whether in person or over an email. He is an incredibly kind man, has a deep love for God and more and more for caring for people, has eyes that squint when he’s happy or laughing and is man who embodies faithfulness and hope – in work, in life, in his relationship with God. He has taught me to trust and to press on, and I am continually amazed by his work ethic, great muscles and love for our family. Although it’s now a couple days late, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the best earthly dad my Heavenly Father could give me. 😀
One svelte Scotsman!
Love you, dad!
#4. The Real Deal Bonspiel!
Yesterday came after months of excitement and preparation, help and support from many people. I have to say that Mikey, while juggling with all his work and other responsibilities, really put a lot of work into this event and it was hard to believe when the Saturday rolled around. The Real Deal Bonspiel curling tournament, as I said above, was our first fundraiser for STE, and for the first annual fundraiser, it went exceptionally well and exceed our expectations! 😀 It was fun, full of supportive people from different pockets from our lives, involved lots of laughs and good food and yielded about $3,500 for STE!
After a welcome and quick curling lesson from Mikey, we hit the ice in our different teams and crazy outfits and curled for four hours, switching sheets (the “lanes” you curl in), throwing rocks (the equipment you slide down the ice) and yelling out hardcore curling phrases like, “Hurry hard!” and “Whoa! Whoa!”

Our incredible chef and sous-chef! Aaron and Amy are truly incredible and the food was amazing!
Mikey and I were so thankful for all those who showed up and spent nearly their entire Saturday with us at the wonderful Oilfields Curling Rink in Black Diamond. We had many wonderful local businesses donate to the silent auction (including Calgary’s Camper’s Village, Arbonne – thanks Carla! – Field Stone Fruit Wines, Buttercream Bake Shoppe, the Fallentimber Meadery, some personal training sessions with me and some massages from our friend and masseuse Levi, and even some infamous home-baked goods from my mother-in-law! I also made some granola for a few of the for-fun prizes:
So many people participated, chipped in, and helped make this event a success.
Showing off some of the goods!
Ben & Christy peruse the table.
After the curling we all headed upstairs for some STE trivia and the prizes (best name, best dressed, best score, etc) and got ready to eat! On the menu was pulled pork, steak with three different homemade sauces to choose from, rice, baked beans, an incredible coleslaw salad, a mixed greens salad with blackberries and a wonderful unknown-to-me creamy cheese, buns, and side skewers. Dessert included a fig pudding and chocolate, vanilla and carrot cake cupcakes decorated curling-style! What a treat it all was! Everyone was hungry and everyone was satisfied thanks to Aaron and Amy’s hard work!
As the tasty food comas set in, we were able to share a bit of the history of STE, our core values and why we do what we do, and ways that others can partner with us. Everyone there has supported/is supporting us in some way, and filling them in on what’s new and what’s coming up this summer was wonderful because they are people who know our story and have followed it. We could not have done anything up to this point without help from other people, so being able to thank them and also offer ways for them to be involved was so neat for us; it truly is all about people – community counts. Thanks to everyone who came and made the event such an amazing time and wonderful success! Mikey and I feel encouraged, uplifted and ready for the summer ahead.
Today has been such a great day! Mikey and I slept in, went to a very moving church service where we prayed for and watched many people be prayed for at the front of the church as we learned about healing and grabbed lunch at the Farmer’s Market where we hoped to say thanks to many of the vendors who supported yesterday’s event. It was bustling! I love that atmosphere, and the Greek food we got hit.the.spot too! After a late lunch we popped over to visit our friend Heather who’s just had radiation and is in the final stages of her thyroid cancer treatment. We were able to visit with her and her husband Roger for a while and share some good news with them, and it was great to not only see their smiles and share some tears but just connect as she’s walking through a pretty tough week and end to her treatments. Roger brought her some gummie bears from their cute daughter and it got Mikey and I thinking… Before I knew it this happened:
Ohhhh yeah! You know we’ll be watching a movie and chowing down on those later. 😉
And that’s a a glimpse (or maybe more of a lingering look) at five recent things. Please, share with me a recent thing from your life – tried any good workouts lately? Munched any candy like us? Seen a good movie? Spent some time with people you love this weekend?
Grateful for this community of readers and bloggers…here’s to a great week ahead! Live well & be well friends,
